Research Issue: Human Computer Interaction in Cars

Fachgebiet Augmented Reality (FAR)

General description

The automobile environment can get split into the area of In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) and the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The major issue of all those systems is to keep a driver's distraction as minimal as possible. Research for IVIS systems focusses on effective data aggregation and intuitive information presentation. Issues for ADAS systems try to maximize the driver's glance time on the road and to actively assist the driver in his driving task. The researched issues range from increasing spatial perception by presenting environmental information in AR as well as spatial support for determination of life-critical environmental events.

Associated Projects

SernsorVis

SensorVis

Sensors are the foundation for the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Knowing about the capabilities of sensors and deducable contextual information enables the design of information sources and interaction concepts. The SensosVis project therefore developed presentation and collaboration systems for visualization of such sensor data in laborytory and in-car setups. These environments enable experiencing and discussing about presentable interaction concepts and live experience as if it would be shown is a (not yet existing) Head-Up Display.

PARENT.png

PARENT

PARENT is a design and evaluation platform for innovative driver assistance systems and their HCI. On the one hand, traffic scenarios can easily be generated and evaluated. On the other hand, generated HCI concepts are easy to evaluate against a baseline.

CAR

The goal of CAR is to create a collaboration platform for computer scientists (UI programmers) and non-technicans (human factors, psychologists etc.). The platform allows collaborative design of visualizations and interaction metaphors to be used in the next-generation cars with Head-Up Displays. We focus on two scenarios: parking assistance and a tourist guide.
