Hauptseminar/Master Seminar:
Selected Angiographic Imaging Topics

Markus Kowarschik, Peter Maday, Richard Brosig, Tobias Benz

Type: Advanced Seminar Course
Type: Master Seminar
Type: Seminar
SWS: 2+0
ECTS: 4 Credits
Location: MI 03.13.010
Time: See schedule below
Course Language: English

Content

X-ray based angiographic imaging systems (C-arm systems) represent the most common devices in the context of interventional imaging. Minimally invasive procedures cover treatments of the brain (e.g., coiling of cerebral aneurysms and recanalization of occluded vessels) and the heart (e.g., electrophysiological procedures and coronary interventions), for example.

The purpose of this seminar is to focus on selected current research topics in angiographic imaging. It is based on the contents of the lecture "Interventional Imaging and Image processing" in the winter term 2012/2013.

The seminar topics will cover:

  • Cardiac imaging & motion compensation
  • Blood flow quantification
  • Perfusion imaging in the angio suite
  • Angio/IVUS co-registration
  • Registration of 2D/3D angio images with pre-operative images (CT/MR)
  • Image-based and sensor-based catheter tracking
  • Stent detection and reconstruction
  • Artifact reduction in X-ray based 3D imaging
  • Etc.

Announcements

  • [2013-06-18] Change of the schedule: the first session starts on Fri, 21st June at 14:30, not at 14:00
  • [2013-06-17] Clarification: a handout in the narrow sense of the word is not mandatory. On this website the term handout was used in an imprecise manner to refer to the report (which of course is mandatory).
  • [2013-05-28] Talk on "Blood flow quantification" was moved from 21.06. to 12.07.
  • [2013-05-28] Talk on "Stent detection and reconstruction" was moved from 12.07. to 21.06.
  • [2013-04-19] Time schedule has been finalized.
  • [2013-04-19] Materials for topic 7 ("Registration of 2D/3D angio images with pre-operative images (CT/MR) Part II") have been updated.
  • [2013-04-17] Slides of the instructional lecture and papers are online.
  • [2013-04-05] There will be a small introduction talk on 15.4 between 16:00 and 16:45 in room 03.13.008.
  • [2013-02-19] The topics are assigned to the accepted students.
  • [2013-01-31] The slides of the initial presentation are available here.
  • [2013-01-15] There will be a short introduction and organization meeting on Jan 31st, 2013, 11:45 (right after the last IIIP lecture) in MI 03.13.010.

Requirements

  • Basics of medical image modalities
  • Image processing basics
  • You should have taken the lectures CAMP or IIIP before.

Presentation

Each participant is required to give a 30-40 min presentation about a selected topic. A template for the presentation slides can be found here.

Report

Each participant is required to prepare a report of 4-5 pages for the other participants of the seminar. A latex template for the report can be found here. The deadline for the report is one week after the presentation.

Schedule

The seminar starts with an introduction meeting at the beginning of the semester. Each topic will shortly be presented in this meeting. There will be three blocks of presentations in the end of the summer term, each will cover five presentations. Each presentation is followed by a discussion. All seminar participants are expected to be present in each of the three sessions and to actively participate in the discussion.

Literature and Helpful Links

A lot of scientific publications can be found online.

The following list may help you to find some further information on your particular topic:

Some publishers:

Libraries (online and offline):

Some further hints for working with references:

  • JabRef is a Java program for comfortable working with Bibtex literature databases. Handy feature: if you know the PubMed ID for an article, JabRef can import data from there (via "Web Search/Medline").
  • Mendeley is a cross-platform program for organising your references.

If you find useful resources that are not already listed here, please tell us, so we can add them for others. Thanks.
