My PhD

My PhD topic is the integration of range imaging by the mean of RGBD cameras into mobile C-arms. My first work was to replace the video camera by an RGBD camera of type Kinect into the CamC? system. I am currently working on an alternative to this system where no mirror is necessary, making its integration into C-arms and therefore surgery rooms much easier.

The first 3 years of my PhD were founded by Bayerischen Forschungsstiftung. I have been recently awarded the Laura Bassi Award, which allows me to pursue my research for an extra year.

Research interests

  • Augmented Reality for medical applications
  • Visualization of medical data
  • Xray and range imaging

Camera Augmented Mobile C-arm ( CamC )

Camera Augmented Mobile C-arm ( CamC )

Mobile C-arms are an everyday tool to acquire X-ray images in the operating room during surgery. The Camera Augmented Mobile C-arm (CamC) system augments a regular mobile C-arm by a video camera for X-ray and video image overlay. Thanks to the mirror construction and one time calibration of the device, the acquired X-ray images are co-registered with the video images without any further calibration or registration during the intervention. The CamC system can support a wide range of potential clinical applications, such as needle guidance, interlocking of intramedullary nails, and pedicle screw placement.
