Diploma thesis / Masterarbeit / Bachelor thesis (DA/MA/BA): Automatic definition of cardiac axis in emission tomography

Advisor: Prof. Nassir Navab
Supervision by: Axel Martinez Möller, Stephan Nekolla

Abstract

Emission tomography (PET and SPECT) are functional imaging modalities showing the three-dimensional distribution of radiolabelled molecules in the body. A major application is for cardiac imaging, mainly to evaluate myocardial perfusion.

Cardiac images are reoriented before their clinical reading in order to have short- and long-axis views of the left ventricle. The reorientation is currently performed manually by defining the cardiac axis on two different views. The goal of the project is to develop and evaluate automatic methods to define the cardiac axis based on the image content and prior anatomical knowledge.

The project will be done at the department of Nuclear Medicine, Klinikum Rechts der Isar der TU München (Max-Weber Platz)

Requirements

  • Good programming skills (in C++, Matlab, or IDL)
  • Interest in medical imaging
  • Previous experience in image processing (or attendance of courses) would be helpful - segmentation, image analysis and pattern recognition
  • Work place: Nuklearmedizinische Klinik, Klinikum Rechts der Isar (Max-Weber Platz)

Start date

Early 2010.
