Volume Flow Rate Determination in the Cranial Vessel Tree Based on Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Data

Abstract

Quantitative MR techniques based on phase-contrast flow sensitive MR-sequences are from increasing interest for cardiac volume flow measurements. They are not only non-invasive but usually also yield more meaningful results than for example CT scans using contrast agents. In the cranial vessel tree, however, they are still far from prevailing. This is mainly caused to the fact that fro quantitative measurements two MR examinations are required: in the first examination a volume for segmenting the cranial vessel tree is acquired; based on this the attending physician decides where to place the usually double-oblique slices for a quantitative MR-recording. The placement is chosen to receive flow information about specific vessels. This thesis will develop a method to generate quantitative information about the blood flow for all major vessels in a full 3D dataset without manual interaction during data acquisition. This will be achieved by combining sets of parallel phase-contrast images in different orientations with an abstract representation of the segmented vessel-tree.
