Title: 3D Sketching in a Virtual Environment
Abstract: Sketching is a frequently used tool in the workflow of architects and engineers, which is used to draft and exchange ideas with others. However, sketching is still performed mainly on a sheet of paper. Thus, a 3D drawing remains fixed in the 2D plane of the sheet, and can be observed only from the view point it was originally sketched from. This research project introduces a new approach to sketching, where the sketch is transformed into a 3D model in real time. The user sketches on a digital multi-touch input device, while the reconstructed 3D shape is simultaneously visualized in the background. Furthermore, the user can change the point of view during the very process of sketching. It is also possible to use other structures from the 3D environment to align the sketch better. The implemented user interface resembles closely the classical pen-and-paper metaphor, there the user interacts with the surface using a simple 2DOF pen and no additional controls.
