Fusion of in-vivo and ex-vivo microscopy volumes of mouse brain samples

Type:Clinical Project
Student: Eleni Siampli
Advisor: Nassir Navab
Supervision by: Dr. Martin Groher, Mehmet Yigitsoy

Abstract

Confocal and sectioned microscopy are two complementary techniques which can, if properly fused add valuable information to each other. The goal of this project is to develop techniques for image fusion and enhancement after aligning confocal microscopy volumes with volumes reconstructed from a stack of sectioned microscopy.

Task

Use existing tools for 3D image registration to align in-vivo and ex-vivo 3D microscopy volumes. Based on the registration different approaches to volume fusion shall be developed to enhance structures in one modality with structures of the other. To check alignment and define the best enhancement strategy, a close collaboration with the central institute of neuro-pathology at Munich university is required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge about image processing and registration techniques (e.g. lecture CAMP I) is required.
  • Experience in C/C++ and a basic knowledge on microscopy would be a plus.

Resources

Development can either be done on a private notebook or on a desktop workstation at IMETUM. No special equipment is required.
