Title: Feasibility study of beta probes for intraoperative detection of malignancy
Abstract: Cancer is becoming one of the biggest problems in our aging society. The most common and still the most efficient therapy in cancer is tumor resection. One of the major issues in cancer resection is to guarantee that the complete tumor is included within the extracted tissue. Currently the most common method for checking the resection border is the frozen section procedure . The surgeon is resecting tissue suspected to be tumorous and then the resected sample is examined by pathologist. If on the borders of the resected tissue any cancer tissue is left, the resection must be repeated. The whole proces is a rather time consuming process.
The intraoperative β−probes are used since the early 90’s in operating rooms, but physicians are not content with this technology. Currently β − probe systems require long experience from the surgeon. Finding and marking active tumor tissue is not a trivial issue.
As a complementary to the frozen section procedure, β− probe resection control was introduced. Using navigated β −probes and nuclear tracers, the surgeon can examine resected borders before and during the time needed for the frozen section procedure. This system can increase accuracy and decrease time of the cancer resection operation.
Even though β − probes were introduced long ago, few experiments have been done on human patients. However, besides technical evaluation little - to nothing has been done towards evaluating the biological feasibility of β − probes.
In this thesis we will focus on biological feasibility studies of using the β − probe intraoperatively. Two types of cells are examined, the human bladder cancer, and the human foreskin fibroblasts. The thesis is concentrating on proving the possibility of generating images of tumors and distinguishing tumor from non-tumor cells. The β− probe images were compared to images of labeled human bladder cancer with luciferine enzyme.
To generate stable and repeatable images a scanning system using a mechanical positioning device is introduced. We will present a test of the system as well as data acquisitions to validate the system and to generate future model definitions.
