Diploma Thesis: User Interface for Medical Augmented Reality

by Marion Gantner
Advisor Prof. Dr. Nassir Navab
Supervised by Tobias Sielhorst

Abstract
Augmented Reality is an emerging technology with promising applications in the medical domain, e.g. medical education or intra-operative assistance. The latter offers an enhanced view for keyhole surgery providing the physician with information in a more intuitive way.

To use Augmented Reality for intra-operative surgery assistance a special User Interface is necessary. The traditional Human-Computer Interaction tools like mouse and keyboard are not suitable for surgery environments, because special restrictions must be considered. Besides of sterile equipment, no discharged air is allowed in an operation room and tracking systems in combination with possibly used CT or MRT may cause electromagnetic interference. Furthermore the system should not constrain the physician during his work, but assist him to make his work more comfortable.

Several research groups already worked and still work on this subject, so the first step of the thesis is to analyse published work and to carry together their advantages and disadvantages. Therefor not only medical User Interfaces but also Virtual Reality systems are considered.
In the end this thesis should give a possible solution for a specific medical attendance in cooperation and arrangement with the respective physicians.
