IDP/SEP Project (also BA thesis possible): Intuitive, high-level GUI for Segmentation of Aortic Aneurysm Thrombus

Project by: Michael Emmersberger
Advisor: Nassir Navab
Supervision by: Stefanie Demirci, Max Baust

Abstract

In many medical treatment and diagnosis processes, extraction of certain organs is an important preprocessing step. As automatic algorithms are only applicable for the segmentation of very few organs and structures, most extraction is done manually by the physicians or their assistants themselves. Especially for the segmentation of aneurysm thrombuses of abdominal aortic aneurysms, complete manual interaction is highly cumbersome. By an intuitive GUI and semi-automatic algorithms, we would like to facilitate the doctor’s work.

In the course of this project, you are required to create a complete GUI for aneurysm thrombus segmentation in Qt (http://trolltech.com/products/qt). Most of the segmentation algorithms are already available and need to be integrated in your application. The project also provides the possibility to work closely together with our cooperating physicians at TUM-Klinikum rechts der Isar (http://www.med.tu-muenchen.de). As the resulting software will be designed to be immediately used by the physicians, their opinion and thoughts should also be taken into account during implementation. We have office and experiment infrastructure available in our lab at Klinikum rechts der Isar which can be used by you during the entire course of the project.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of C++ is required
  • Interest in working on an interdisciplinary project
  • Knowledge of GUI-creation and graphical visualization is of advantage but not required

Your Benefit

  • You get the chance to work in an interdisciplinary environment, i.e. at the hospital.
  • You have the opportunity to visit medical treatment interventions performed by vascular surgeons.
  • You will have the option to participate in writing a scientific paper about the results of the evaluation.

Contact

If you are interested, write an email to Stefanie Demirci or come by the office either on Tuesdays,Thursdays or Fridays.
