Mobile Telephony Management in the Surgery Room

Open topic, suitable for any kind of project (MA, BA, IDP,...)!

Abstract

DECT phones usually increase the reachability of the surgeons and assistants. However they introduce noise and disturbance in the operating room. To solve this problem, the "situational awareness" of the system is to be used. With a system that analyzes the current situation in the surgery and aware of what’s happening can reduce the disturbance while handling phones more effectively.

MITI research group is willing to get a student to research and implement a solution for a system that take the responsibility to reply on the phones while the surgeon is performing a surgical operation. The system should be intelligent enough to categorize the received phone calls according to their importance and prioritize them according to the analysis of the current situation in the operating room – and forward the call to the surgeon if it is really needed. Also it’s important that the system store all the information needed to recognize the call (e.g. phone number, importance, and maybe the subject of the call).

Project includes research opportunities in selecting the most appropriate technology and intelligent algorithm to reduce disturbance while not missing the important information of the caller. Student has the opportunity to include his or her creative ideas in how to solve and implement the solution.

MITI - Minimally invasive Interdisciplinary Therapeutical Intervention

This project is co-supervised by the research group MITI, so most of the work would happen there.

MITI is an interdisciplinary research group. It deals with the development of innovative diagnostic procedures and therapeutic solution concepts for minimally invasive surgery.

The research group was founded in 1999 at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich. The motivation is to develop patient friendly methods for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, which are mainly applied in surgery and gastroenterology. Since its inception MITI sets value on interdisciplinary work. Competences from engineering, industry and the medical field meet and a know-how centre for medical technology emerges. Therefore, MITI is a reliable meeting point for everyone, who is looking for innovative solutions in the medical technology field.

The cooperation between physicians and engineers leads to research with emphasis on the relevance for clinical practice and the usability in daily routine. This enables a fast and focused product development.

MITI is managed by Prof. Dr. Hubertus Feussner and Dr.-Ing. Armin Schneider.
