Overview

A lot of algorithms for computer vision and image processing application, such as image segmentation, image registration, or image filtering, require the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). In many cases, these PDEs are of parabolic nature, i.e., they are comparable to the standard heat diffusion equation. In this course, several standard and non-standard techniques for solving these kinds of equations are presented. After laying the theoretical foundations, several methods for discretization, such as finite difference methods and finite element methods are discussed. Moreover, a particular focus is also the stability analysis of finite difference schemes as well as non-standard topics such as Sobolev gradient methods, inverse heat diffusion, and PDEs on arbitrary surfaces. For a detailed schedule, the script, and all kinds of supplementary material please refer to the moodle course!
