Invited Talk by Ali Kamen: Medical Image Fusion for Disease Quantitation and Image Guided Procedures

Abstract

In recent years, a major trend in the healthcare has been the explosion of imaging data mainly targeted to understand disease processes and to guide and monitor the therapeutic procedures. For instance, higher resolution multi-modal images are becoming more and more available longitudinally for the diagnosis and early assessment of the treatment response to the pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, minimally invasive interventional procedures are increasingly guided by complementing the real-time intra-procedural images (e.g., ultrasound) with the information from the pre-procedural planning data (e.g., CT and MR). Image registration and fusion is an enabling technology addressing these challenges. Establishing spatial correspondences across multiple images is essential in understanding the anatomical structures, their function, and any pathology or abnormality. In this talk, I will outline a collection of Siemens intramural and NIH funded projects responsive to the current trends in both diagnostic and interventional settings.

Short Bio

Dr. Ali Kamen received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Miami. He has been employed at Siemens Corporate Research (Princeton, NJ) since 2000, and is currently a principal key expert and leads the Oncology Imaging Group, which focuses on innovations for diagnostic and interventional applications. Dr. Kamen has led the development and commercialization of several technologies for image guided procedures, including a patient positioning system for radiotherapy and a combination ultrasound/CT guidance system with image fusion capabilities. These technologies have contributed to product success by providing highly differentiated features and capabilities. Dr. Kamen leads active collaborations with a number of universities including the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, and University of Iowa, with more than $5M awarded from a number of NIH-funded grants. Dr. Kamen has more than 60 peer reviewed publications, 15 issued patents and 25 patents pending.
