Abstract
On a daily basis, surgeons refer to information presented in medical images before entering the OR. Once surgery starts, medical images have a more passive role in the action plan. The roles of medical images are often diagnostic (used as a map) rather than therapeutic (used as an assistant). In this presentation, I will discuss a few attempts we developed in the U of Alberta to enhance the role of medical images inside the operating room, exploring the impact of image-integrated concept on pre-surgery planning, surgical performance, and on surgeons’ mental readiness.
Bio
Dr. Bin Zheng practiced as a pediatric surgeon in China before immigrated to Canada in 1999. He entered the School of Kinesiology at the Simon Fraser University, and completed his
PhD? training in 2005. Differing to most medical researches focusing on patients and their health problems, Dr. Bin Zheng put surgeons under the spotlight. Explicitly, Bin studies surgeon’s performance in the operating room. He is interested in the the eye-hand coordination, spatial orientation, and the skills acquisition process of surgeons. Dr. Zheng’s researches aim to shorten the learning curve of surgeons by introducing simulation-based training programs.
Currently, Dr. Zheng is the Endowed Research Chair in Surgical Simulation in the Department of Surgery of the University of Alberta. He collaborates with surgeons, computing scientists, clinical educators, and psychologists to develop simulators and evaluation educational outcome of simulation-based programs. The long-term goal is to promote the use of simulation in surgery for improving care quality and patient safety.
