Abstract:
Database-guided Methods in Medical Imaging Traditional imaging tasks such as segmentation, motion estimation, tracking and registration are difficult when dealing with unseen data. One of the reasons is a poor underlying data model inferred from a small sample size, which most often constrains the algorithm performance. We introduce database-guided methods as a new data-driven paradigm that directly exploits expert annotation of large medical databases. We show the benefits of formulating detection, segmentation and motion estimation as learning problems and demonstrate a number of applications. The focus is on cardiology and vascular imaging: Echo, Cardiac CT, Cardiac MRI, and Fluoroscopy. We conclude with a summary of our research to build the next generation of semantic, scalable search engines for biomedical images.
