3D Visual Media for Mixed and Augmented Reality

Abstract:

Recent computer vision technology makes innovative progress in 3D visual media industry. In this talk, I would like to introduce some approaches for making use of the computer vision technology in order to achieve innovative application systems of 3D visual media for mixed and augmented reality. First, I will demonstrate the effectiveness of multiple viewpoint videos and depth videos as 3D visual media applications, in which 3D shape reconstructions and view synthesis as computer vision technologies are used. Next, I will introduce how computer vision based object detection and tracking can be used for augmented reality application, in which digital information is displayed over the real world with a see-through display. In such application of AR, 3D analysis of the target scene is one of significant key technology based on a state-of-art in computer vision.

Biography: Hideo Saito received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Keio University, Japan, in 1992. Since then, he has been on the Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University. In 1997 to 1999, he had joined into Virtualized Reality Project in the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University as a visiting researcher. Since 2006, he has been a full Professor of Department of Information and Computer Science, Keio University. He served as program co-chair of ISMAR 2008 and 2009. Now he is a steering committee member of ISMAR. He also served as an Area Chair of ACCV 2009, 2010, and 2012. His research interests include computer vision, mixed reality, virtual reality, and 3D video analysis and synthesis.
