Applications of Computer Vision in Minimally Invasive Surgery
Abstract:
In recent years, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has transformed the general practice
of surgery. The benefits are well documented, however, current instrument
design and visualisation make MIS challenging and limit what the surgeon can achieve.
The future of surgery will be shaped by hardware and software which can extend the current
functional capabilities of the surgeon. Computer vision has an increasingly important role to play by
utilising images captured by laparoscopic and endoscopic cameras (CCD/CMOS). I will discuss the challenges of
computer vision in MIS and the roles that feature tracking and Simultaneous Localisation
And Mapping (SLAM) can play in facilitating new surgical procedures such as motion compensation,
Image Guided Surgery, Dynamic View Expansion and Optical Biopsy Mapping.
Biography:
Peter Mountney obtained his Ph.D. in Medical Imaging from Imperial College London in 2010 before joining Siemens Corporate Research. His work has focuses on exploring the use of intra-operative imaging in interventional surgery to extend the current functional capabilities of surgeons. Central to his research are the areas of robotics and computer vision and the development of techniques for the minimally invasive and deforming environments. His research interests lie specifically in Simultaneously Localization And Mapping (SLAM) and feature tracking. His work includes the development of the MC-SLAM system and the Context Specific Descriptor (CSD) tracking algorithm.
