Deformable Registration Methods

Diploma thesis by Darko Zikic

Abstract

This thesis implements a variational method for deformable registration and applies it to different medical problems. First we explore different approaches to the problem of deformable registration of medical images. After comparing feature-based and intensity-based approaches, we concentrate on the intensity-based variational method for deformable registration. The main reason are the inherent difficulties of the feature-based methods, i.e. feature extraction and feature-matching. The intensity-based variational method presents a general framework that can be adapted using a variety of similarity measures and regularization terms. This way, it can be adapted to a wide range of medical registration problems for different imaging modalities. We present an implementation using efficient numerical methods. Finally the implemented method is performed for different medical applications.
