IDP: Interface and Workflow Integration of a C++ Statistical Reconstruction Toolbox for X-ray Computed Tomography in Radiology

Supervision by: Tobias Lasser, Matthias Wieczorek

Abstract

Reconstruction of X-ray computed tomography (CT) data enables insight into the human body without a surgical procedure. The basic concept comes down to sending X-rays through the human body and measuring the changed X-ray on the other side of the patient. Such methods are called projective imaging methods. For a long time the sole quantity that has been measured was X-ray absorption, i.e. how much energy the electro-magentic wave lost while traversing the body. Recent advances have enabled the measurement of complementing phase-contrast and dark-field signals.
In order to reconstruct a 3D volume of the human body providing a map of the physical properties which led to the according projective measurements there exist several algorithms. Additionally, prior assumptions or prior knowledge can be incorporated into this reconstruction process, for example as regularization.
Parameter tuning, comparison and evaluation of these different approaches is key for clinical and scientific purposes.
Our research group develops a C++ software framework called CAMPrecon which enables a flexible and abstract structure to model and compute numerical tomographic reconstructions.

Tasks

The aim of this project is the implementation of an abstract and flexible structure for property handling in our C++ reconstruction framework, facilitating interface and workflow integration for users from radiology.
