Investigation of Local Phase for medical imaging
IDP for students with minor math or electrical engineering!
The calculation of the local phase of a signal is a known technique for 1-D signals. The extension of this concept to higher dimensions - and making it therefore usable for a wide range of medical imaging applications - was recently proposed in the literature. The student would have to work into this very interesting mathematical conepts and investigate its applications to medical imaging. The tests should be conducted in Matlab which presents an easy to use and powerful environment for this type of experiments.
The following images show in the left column show the original signal. One can clearly observe the signal inhomogeneity in the MR images, making the detection of the structural information difficult. In contrast, the local phase images in the right column nicely display the structural information.
