Abstract
Projectiles from firearms are among the penetrating foreign bodies in the routine forensic medicine. Commonly used techniques for the assessment of the extent of the injury and for the localization diagnostics are conventional radiography and CT. The localization of a projectile is possible by means of tomographic techniques in three-dimensional space.
During the reconstruction of shooting channel, the fundamentals of ballistics cannot be ignored. This project is about so-called "soap blocks" that have been shot with different calibers from various distances, and were then examined with CT. The work will be done in close collaboration between the Radiology Department of LMU Klinikum Inennstadt and "Computer Aided Medical Procedures".
Task
The goal is to analyze the CT datasets in terms of diameter and inlet/outlet angle of the projectile as well as diameter and volume of the filling channel itself.
Methods
The methods will include segmentation of CT data sets and processing/analysis of findings based on the segmentation results.
Requirements
- Programming experience in MATLAB and C/C++ is required.
- Knowledge in image processing, especially in segmentation, is of advantage.
