Gamification in Sensor Registration (BA/MA/GR)

gamification.jpg

Description

Gamification - The use of design elements characteristic for games in non-game contexts (Deterding et. al) Over the course of recent years Gamification has become one of the most rapidly growing fields among scientifical courses. A development that by now lead to its widespread adoption among industry and multiple fields of computer science. We aim to apply elements of Gamification to ease users into essential registration/calibration tasks.

Given an example process:

In sensor-to-sensor registration, two devices track a target to calculate their respective positional-/rotational offset. To do this, the user is required to hold a tracking-target visibly in their views and move it freely arround.

The user's task specifically comes down to: - Keep the target in the view of both sensors at all times. - Move it slowly - Don't do any too sudden changes in movement - Angle the marker in all directions while keeping it visible for both sensors - Cover the biggest possible area with your target

After a given time, the precise offset is calculated.

The focus of this project is to gamify this calibration process and evaluate the results. Applying students will implement their own Gamification ideas for this process and evaluate them against the non-gamified approach.

The tracking functionality will be provided in a given package.

Title: Gamification in Sensor Registration
Abstract: Gamification - The use of design elements characteristic for games in non-game contexts (Deterding et. al) Over the course of recent years Gamification has become one of the most rapidly growing fields among scientifical courses. A development that by now lead to its widespread adoption among industry and multiple fields of computer science. We aim to apply elements of Gamification to ease users into essential registration/calibration tasks. Given an example process: In sensor-to-sensor registration, two devices track a target to calculate their respective positional-/rotational offset. To do this, the user is required to hold a tracking-target visibly in their views and move it freely arround. The user's task specifically comes down to: - Keep the target in the view of both sensors at all times. - Move it slowly - Don't do any too sudden changes in movement - Angle the marker in all directions while keeping it visible for both sensors - Cover the biggest possible area with your target After a given time; the precise offset is calculated. The focus of this project is to gamify this calibration process and evaluate the results. Applying students will be allowed to implement their own Gamification ideas for this process and evaluate them against the non-gamified approach. The tracking functionality will be provided in a given package.
