Marker Tracking in MRI for Colon Transit Measurements

Abstract
Symptoms of colonic motility disorder, i.e. diarrhea or constipation, are commonly encountered complaints in daily clinical practice, and therefore considered a major health problem. Most technical approaches which describe and partly quantitate colonic motility are in experimental settings not readily applicable to the clinical use. Ingestion of radiopaque markers or isotopes and measurement of colonic transit time and their migration through the gut has been feasible in clinical settings , however, these approaches obviously have several drawbacks (radiation!).
A new approach to this problem is to perform a simple and practical measurement of colonic transit applying MR-visible markers in the patient. (marked red in the picture of an MR-slice below)
Tracking of those markers throughout the resulting MR-volumes taken at different time intervals after ingestion has been performed mostly manually up to now.
The goal of this project is to develop a method of automatically or semiautomatically segmenting and tracking those markers.
