Abstract

In this thesis I propose the eMeter infrastructure which enables consumers to measure their personal energy consumption and thus helps them to conserve energy. It is designed to be as lightweight and easy-to-use as possible. For this purpose it uses one of the upcoming smart electric meters as a single sensor and presents the user interface on a mobile phone. Users can keep track of their entire house consumption as well as measure the consumption and cost of single appliances.

Description

The eMeter application is an iPhone visualization of personal energy consumption data. It provides realtime feedback about the energy consumption as well as feedback about the consumption of single appliances. Thus eMeter enables the user to identify the most important energy consumers in his home. This can result in a lower power consumption and hence in cost savings for the user.

Architecture

The energy consumption is measured by a brand-new electric meter called smart meter (which will be built into every new house in the EU as of 2010). A SMLParser for the Smart Message Language (SML) which is the native language of the SmartMeter gets measurements every second and sends them to the EnergyServer. This server saves every measurement in a MySQL database and provides RESTful interfaces both human-readable in webbrowsers as well as machine-friendly in JSON. eMeter uses these interfaces to get the current consumption as well as statistics about past values.

Features

eMeter provides the following functionality:
  • Display the current consumption in real time. (enriched by ratings based on the size of the household)
  • Statistics and line-charts for the consumption of the last hour, day, week, month, quarter, half-year and year.
  • Bar-charts to compare kWh and cost of the last few hours, days, weeks, months quarters, half-years and years.
  • Measure single appliances and view their yearly cost.
  • Save measured devices and tag them with location, type, usage and picture.
