Master Thesis: Development of algorithms for reduction of artifacts caused by dental implants in cone-beam computer tomography

X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is one of the leading modalities for diagnostic imaging. In recent years, the development of cone-beam computed tomography systems such as for dental or intraoperative applications have indicated that the spectrum of applications of X-ray CT is extending into other medical fields like surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and many more. One major obstacle in such applications is the presence of implants in the field-of-view, which cause so-called metal artifacts. In this master thesis, we are planning to investigate possibilities to reduce metal artifacts for example in situations where implants or fillings are in the region of interest. This project focuses on developing algorithms that correctly modulate the physical behavior of the imaging system in the presence of implants. The successful candidate should possess adequate system-programming skills (for example: Matlab/Simulink, C/C++) and additional knowledge in parallel computing such as, for example, the programming of GPUs. This project will be carried out in collaboration between the Department of Radiology and ImFusion GmbH. Further information about the company can be found at
