Abstract

This presentation consists of 2 parts. Each part describes a major activity, in which Rockwell Scientific (RSC), a corporate research laboratory in the US, was involved in the past 12 months.

Augmented Reality (AR) has captured the interest of industry. In collaboration with Rockwell Automation, RSC has developed and implemented a demonstrator for AR on the factory floor in the example of a pump circuit. It allows the live visualization of pump status data, using a head-worn display. The tracking is solely done using computer vision, based on a proprietary design of markers and algorithms. The prototype has been demonstrated at the Automation Fair in November 2003 in Milwaukee.

The DARPA Grand Challenge 2004 has received a lot of interest world-wide. Employees of RSC have formed a team and a company, SciAutonics, LLC, to participate in this race of autonomous ground vehicles. This presentation gives an overview on the event as well on the specific preparations and achievements of the SciAutonics team(s).
