The aim of this project is to investigate, design, and implement a novel prototype device capable of acquiring the skin surface in multiple spectral bands and generating a 3D reconstruction of it. The reconstruction will allow the system to compare quantitatively the results with any previous one, and show the physician the evolution of a skin lesion. Moreover, the software will also search for melanocytic skin lesions suspicious for melanoma using established medical criteria, and assist the physician to check these suspicious lesions in more detail through the multispectral information. This will provide the physician with a tool that documents the evolution of skin lesions allowing to follow these objectively over time irrespective of common problems like tanning, body weight changes, deformation, etc. The final goal is to improve skin cancer detection stages when therapeutic intervention results in survival rate close to 100%, as well as to provide a tool for the quantitative evaluation of skin cancer types such as cutaneous lymphoma that have to be monitored over time. This approach should increase not only the detection sensitivity but also specificity; an important notion particularly for patients with several atypical naevi for which the false negative rate is over 80%. The scanner will then also be a tool to reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.
