Sensor-Aided Visual Camera Localization and Tracking for Handheld Augmented Reality

This thesis explores novel approaches to improve visual camera localization and tracking for Handheld Augmented Reality. In particular, given a static environment with a known absolute orientation (and position), we improve the invariance and distinctiveness of feature descriptors for visual features in the environment. This is achieved by taking advantage of the auxiliary sensors attached to the camera in handheld devices, which measure the absolute orientation (and position) of the camera, i.e. GPS, compass, and inertial sensors.

Diese Arbeit erforscht innovative Verfahren zur Verbesserung von kamerabasierten Lokalisierungsverfahren für Handheld Augmented Reality. Insbesondere zeigen wir, wie sich in statischen Umgebungen mit einer bekannten absoluten Orientierung (und Position), die Beschreibung von Bildmerkmalen der Umgebung hinsichtlich ihrer Invarianz und Besonderheit verbessern lässt. Dazu verwenden wir Sensoren wie GPS, Kompass und Inertialsensoren, welche in Handheld-Geräten die absolute Orientierung (und Position) der Kamera messen.
