Abstract

Computer science is playing an important, increasing role in medical practices. Medical imaging companies are no more asked by physicians to only produce images of anatomy. Instead, they are asked to design software and hardware systems to provide complex computer-aided solutions for diagnosis, intervention and therapy. There are more and more opportunities for computer science graduates to contribute to the development and deployment of medical solutions. Within the operating rooms, there is an increasing need for the integration and visualization of heterogeneous data acquired by numerous sensors.

This course on computer aided medical procedures exposes the students to the challenges of building the operating rooms of the future. The main focus of the course is in imaging technologies especially intra-operative imaging as well as the visualization of this data. Techniques like segmentation and registration will be explained in various classes.

There will be invited guests from the hospital Rechts der Isar and also medical companies in the classes. They will talk about the physical properties and the clinical use of the different modalitries and techniques. The invited guests will be announced in the course schedule below.

  • Interest in medical image processing

This lecture is going to be succeeded by "Computer Aided Medical Procedures 2" (see summer term 2012 CAMP 2 lecture page) (2+2 SWS, 6 ECTS) in the next summer term (which is recommended, but not obligatory).

Field Trips

Within the CAMP lecture, we try to bring students into contact with industrial leaders providing computer-aided medical systems and software. We plan to arrange the following trips for this lecture. Please note that other lectures overlapping with the field trip days will not be canceled or repeated.

Registration

  • Field trips are free of charge, but the number of places is limited in each case
  • Places for the trip are granted on a first came first served basis
  • Students are required to register for the trips to attend

Registration for the visits and field trips will be done personally at the office of Peter Maday (03.13.039). To make sure all registered students will show up, a deposit of 20 EUR is required at the time of registration. Students are requested to bring the exact amount. The deposit will be returned during the field trips.

Second Brainlab trip

Date: Tuesday 29.01.2013, from 1PM

We will meet directly at BrainLAB at 12:45pm sharp . We cannot provide a bus for this field trip, so you have to get there by yourselves (you can share cars or go by public transport). The address is BrainLAB AG, Kapellenstr. 12, 85622 Feldkirchen.

A short extract about using public transport to arrive at Brainlab from the BrainLAB website: "From Munich City take the S2 towards 'Erding/Markt Schwaben'. Exit at the 'Feldkirchen' stop. From here you can take a taxi or the regional bus 263, in the direction 'Messestadt West.' Brainlab is located a few meters walking distance from the 'Kapellenstraße' bus stop."

Second NARVIS trip

Date: Tuesday 29.01.2013, from 1PM

Meeting point: Directly at the NARVIS Lab at 1:00pm sharp.

Follow the "NARVIS" signs and/or these directions:

  • Take U6 line to Sendlinger tor.
  • After entering the building (Nussbaumstr. 20) use the staircase on the left side. At the staircase you will find signs leading you to the lab
  • Inside the building look for Station 3, which is in the second floor. In the same floor you'll find the NARVIS room (C2.06)

Midterm exam

Results

The maximum achievable score is 39 points. The midterm results are only counted if it improves the final grade. The midterm exams can be checked 7.12.2012 (Friday) from 4PM to 5PM in Abouzar Eslami's office.

Exams

There will be two exams, with the second primarily being the "repeat exam" for the first.

Time & Location:

  1. The final exam will take place at Di 12.2.13 from 09:00 to 11:00 at 5602.EG.001 (00.02.001, MI Hörsaal 1)
  2. The repeat exam will be at Thu April 4 from 1430 till 1630 . The registration period is from 15th till 25th March

Details:

  • Type: written, closed book (i.e. no material allowed), approx. 90 minutes
  • The final exam covers all the materials from the course
  • Information about exam procedure: Merkblatt zur Klausurdurchführung (in German only, English version to come)
  • Grading of the exam:
    • Approx. 80% for questions and problems to solve on the CAMP lectures.
    • Approx. 20% for questions on invited talks.
    • No questions about the field trips.
  • The exam results will be published at TUM-Online.
