M. Huber
Parasitic Tracking for Ubiquitous Augmented Reality
Dissertation (PhD thesis), Fakultät für Informatik, Technische Universität München, November 2011 (online version) (bib)

The determination of the spatial parameters is one of most important parts of any Augmented Reality application. This is especially true considering the convergence of Augmented Reality (AR) and Ubiquitous Computing (Ubiquitous Augmented Reality), which demands ubiquitous availability of tracking data. Especially the general absence of dedicated infrastructure presents a considerable challenge. Thus, to address the unique characteristics of such ubiquitous tracking scenarios and to make location data available in circumstances where no dedicated infrastructure is available, the notion of "Parasitic Tracking" is introduced. The goal is to dynamically combine sensing approaches based on non-tracking related infrastructure into a robust and transparent position estimate. This approach was evaluated using technologies based on radio communication or odometric sensing. A crucial requirement was the development of the "Ubitrack" framework.
