augmented reality (AR) systems that enable the fusion of real and virtual images into a consistent user experience. Different technologies have been proposed over the past decades, which can be grouped into six categories. In this chapter, we discuss the relevant properties of AR displays and present representative milestones for systems in these categories with a focus on medical applications. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the concepts that define the six types of AR displays.
