HCI Design in the OR: A Gesturing Case-study
MICCAI 2012 Workshop on Modeling and Monitoring of Computer Assisted Interventions (M2CAI), Nice, France, October 2012 (bib)

Quality of user interfaces of intra-operative devices was shown to have a direct impact on the outcome of the surgery. In order to improve the usability, in this work we propose a platform to fuse the interfaces of all intra-operative systems in a unified and customized interface, exploiting the specific requirements of the given surgery. Utilizing a specialized visual editor, the behavior of such user interface for the OR can be adapted within different stages of the surgical workflow. Considering a gesturing interface scenario, we demonstrate how the user experience can be customized individually for each individual OR role, supporting the collaborative nature in this complex domain. Furthermore, we propose a methodological approach to exploit such a context-aware solution in real life OR scenarios. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed ideas, we report of the conducted user studies with experienced surgeons and experts of the human computer interactions (HCI) community.
