Content

Navigation systems for computer aided surgery promise benefits for patient through higher accuracy and shorter operation time and benefits for surgeons through reduction of cognitive workload and greater confidence. Modern tracking technologies enable new imaging modalities or extensions of existing ones, e.g. in the form of freehand SPECT or freehand 3D ultrasound, and they are crucial for position and orientation measurement of instruments, imaging devices, patient, surgeons and other objects. In this seminar, different dedicated tracking technologies are going to be presented and discussed, as well as methods for image-based object recognition and tracking. Their application in different medical procedures will be shown, as well as their broader context of navigation, visualisation, and medical augmented reality.

Prerequisites: none mandatory, but knowledge in computer-assisted interventions is of advantage, e.g. from lecture "Computer Aided Medical Procedures".

Essay/Talk

Presentation (about 30-45min) followed by a discussion. Essay (10 pages) including all references used. The essay and presentation have to be done in English for Hauptseminars and German or English for Proseminars. The essay must be written in your own words and not by copy and paste.
