Prof. Heinz U. Lemke, PhD, will be giving an invited talk on Tuesday, April 28th, 13:00-14:00, in room MI 03.13.010:

"From image-guided to model-guided therapy"

Abstract: The traditional imaging approach applied to patient care’s clinical aspects – known as the “image-centric worldview” – has been limited to the images themselves. The model-centric worldview approach of model-guided therapy, however, extends far beyond images: A wide variety of patient information can be integrated with the images, making all relevant data available for surgical interventions and enabling a comprehensive, robust view of the patient, or a patient-specific model. Examples of model-guided therapy will be given from neuro, ENT and cardiovascular surgery. The interchange of patient specific models among surgical system components is equally important. This exchange can only occur if information and communication technology (ICT) and mechatronic systems (MTs) possess infrastructure and interface standards such as a generally accepted reference architecture and specialized extensions of DICOM. The talk will introduce the concept of surgical PACS (S-PACS) – more accurately termed therapy imaging and model management systems (TIMMS). Within this concept, the “image-centric worldview” of classical PACS is complemented by an IT “model-centric worldview” for integration of patient information and surgical workflow.

Short Biography: Heinz U. Lemke is the Director of the International Foundation for Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS). He is Professor of Radiology at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and Professor for Computer Assisted Surgery at the Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS), University of Leipzig. From 1975 to 2006, he was Professor of Computer Science at Technical University Berlin, where he chaired the Department of Computer Graphics and Computer Assisted Medicine. Prof. Lemke is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (IJCARS). His research interests include the development of medical work stations for computer assisted diagnosis and therapy planning, the analysis of surgical workflow and the development of ICT standards for the digital operating room. He is the author of pioneering works in these areas.
