Context Modeling and Recognition for Human-Machine Cooperation in the Operating Room

Abstract:

Modern surgery rooms are complex environments equipped with a great deal of high-technology equipment. Context-aware systems in such an environment could relieve surgical staff from performing simple but time-consuming tasks, and assist them with performing tedious tasks. The potential applications of such a system range from procedure documentation and safety monitoring to task automation and coordinated robotic assistance. In this talk, I will first present an overview of recent work aimed at developing a context-aware human-machine collaborative system for tele-surgery, prototyped on the da Vinci robot at the Johns Hopkins University. Specifically, I will present two different approaches developed for sharing control between the operator and the robot as well as an approach to track deformable curvilinear objects, such as threads, in order to automate their manipulation. Finally, I will present my current research directions at the University of Strasbourg as well as the research environment and the resources available at the different medical centers such as the University Hospital, the IRCAD and the new MixSurg institute. One of the goals of the MixSurg institute is to foster research that will enable the development of a new kind of surgery, called Hybrid Minimally Invasive Surgery. I will describe my plans to develop an intelligent and context-aware workflow monitoring system to be integrated into these new hybrid minimally invasive surgery operating rooms in order to be able to monitor the safety and improve the workflow in such a setting.

Short Bio:

Nicolas Padoy is an Assistant Professor at the University of Strasbourg, holding a Chair of Excellence in medical robotics within the ICube laboratory/MixSurg institute. His research focuses on computer vision, activity recognition and the applications thereof to surgical workflow analysis and human-machine cooperation during surgery. He graduated with a Maîtrise in Computer Science from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon) in 2003 and with a Diploma in Computer Science from the Technische Universität München (TUM), Munich, in 2005. He completed his PhD jointly between the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures (CAMP) at TUM and the INRIA group MAGRIT in Nancy, under the supervision of Dr. Nassir Navab and Dr. Marie-Odile Berger. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral researcher and later an Assistant Research Professor in the Laboratory for Computational Interactions and Robotics (CIRL) headed by Dr. Gregory Hager at the Johns Hopkins University.
