Inverse problems, ill posed and ill conditioned problems, and resolution

Prof. Wolodymyr Madych

Abstract: We explain the terms in the title and outline a connection between them. Using concrete models from tomography we describe a paradigm for dealing with some of the issues which arise in that particular context. Some of the issues dealt with, such as those involving the computation of approximate reconstructions, are of an applied nature while others, such as certain questions involving the characterization and convergence of approximate reconstructions, may be mainly of theoretical interest.

Short biography: Dr. Wolodymyr Madych has been a Professor of Mathematics at University of Connecticut since 1984 and focuses his research in Approximation Theory, which has had a deep impact in areas such as artificial intelligence, neural nets and statistical learning theory; Multiresolution Analysis; and the Radon transform, which constitutes the mathematical basis for tomography (CAT scanners and other devices). He has written many journal articles and well-cited papers on his research.
