Abstract

Quantification of skin properties can provide a better understanding of its behaviour in many applications, such as the wound healing process, the effects of ageing, the process of wrinkle formation, and skin and breast surgeries. Skin is a complex tissue that is anisotropic, heterogeneous, nonlinear, and viscoelastic. Several methods have been developed to characterise the complex mechanical behaviour of skin in-vivo or in-vitro, such as during biaxial, compression, suction, or indentation tests on tissues. Measuring the skin surface deformation is an essential part of all these methods. Three-dimensional (3D) digital image correlation (DIC) is the main image processing method used for measuring skin deformation with subpixel accuracy. Nevertheless, most of the current methods of performing 3D-DIC have a limited accuracy or are not robust enough. In this talk, a newly developed 3D-DIC technique consisted of subpixel image registration and multi-camera calibration algorithms will be introduced. In addition, several examples of using the subpixel image registration algorithm in various fields will be shown and discussed.
