Abstract

This thesis provides a new approach to teach players historical knowledge using a mobile game. Similar to a text adventure the story progresses by a series of text and media messages from a game character that are displayed in the game screen as well as being noti ed to the player. The user interacts with the game by choosing from presented options, by entering keywords as well as by completing mini games. The player should be familiar with this form of communication by usage of popular Instant Messenger Apps. The character is appearing to be trapped in a historical setting, being in desperate need of the players help. By describing the historical context through personal experiences and prompting the user for supplemental information the character provides fundamental knowledge and motivates the player to do further research. In the thesis this concept will be applied to roman history to determine whether the approach is suitable for teaching historical content.
