Interdisciplinary Project (IDP) with minor Medicine: Automatic definition of cardiac axis in emission tomography

Advisor: Prof. Nassir Navab
Supervision by: Axel Martinez Möller, Stephan Nekolla

Abstract

Emission tomography (PET and SPECT) are functional imaging modalities showing the three-dimensional distribution of radioactive molecules in the body. A major application is for cardiac imaging, mainly to evaluate myocardial perfusion.

In order to perform quantitative diagnosis, the left ventricle needs to be spatially sampled. Currently, the operator (physician or MTA) needs to indicate where the heart is located and manually define the basal and apical planes of the heart. The analysis could be significantly improved by developing a method to automatically find and segment the left ventricle based on the image data and prior anatomical knowledge.

The objective of the project is to develop and validate a method to achieve a robust and time-efficient definition of the cardiac axis and segmentation of the left ventricle. Clinical datasets are available for testing purposes.

The project will be done at the department of Nuclear Medicine, Klinikum Rechts der Isar der TU München (Max-Weber Platz)

Title: Automatic definition of cardiac axis in emission tomography images
Abstract: Emission tomography (PET and SPECT) are functional imaging modalities showing the three-dimensional distribution of radiolabelled molecules in the body. A major application is for cardiac imaging, mainly to evaluate myocardial perfusion. Cardiac images are reoriented before their clinical reading in order to have short- and long-axis views of the left ventricle. The reorientation is currently performed manually by defining the cardiac axis on two different views. The goal of the project is to develop and evaluate automatic methods to define the cardiac axis based on the image content and prior anatomical knowledge.
