SEP: Rapid prototyping with Open Inventor for Medical Applications

Abstract

The SEP was part of a project at Siemens Corporate Research, Princeton, where a rapid prototyping environment is being used in order to construct prototypes for medical applications with the Open Inventor framework. Based on this existing environment, to create Open Inventor scene graphs with a graphical IDE, different medical applications have been designed. In order to use those easy to maintain networks in an application later on, a platform has been developed, based on C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), which could load and interpret those networks and interact with them. Besides constructing the MFC application, various nodes have been developed, which could be used in a plug-in-like way and would add additional functionality to the existing library of Open Inventor nodes. The goal was to demonstrate, that it is possible to develop a simple medical application within two to three weeks, by using the graphical IDE to construct the Open Inventor scene graph and the MFC platform to integrate the network into a stand-alone application. Three prototypes have been developed, using this approach.
