Project: "VesARlius"

"VesARlius" is a novel AR system for collaborative and interactive anatomy learning in large groups of co-located students. The "HoloLens" application provides students with the possibility to explore a virtual 3D model of the human body, including annotated structures and multimodal section images such as CT and MRI. Additionally, we integrated a set of functionalities specifically aimed at facilitating the collaboration between students during joint learning sessions. Students have the ability to join synchronized rooms where all users inside such rooms work on the same virtual 3D model. Furthermore, students can place colored pins on the surface of 3D structures and take the role of a "presenter" and guide the attention of other students using a virtual laser pointer. In collaboration with the chair for vegetative anatomy of the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, we are currently in the process of integrating "VesARlius" into the curriculum during dedicated tutorial sessions for first-year medical students. Project: "Magic Mirror"

The "Magic Mirror" is a screen-based Augmented Reality system that allows users to obtain a virtual view inside their own body. By combining techniques such as skeleton tracking, advanced perceptual visualization, and gesture-controlled user interaction, the "Magic Mirror" creates an immersive Augmented Reality experience using simply a Microsoft Kinect camera and a display device. Potential applications of the "Magic Mirror" include interactive anatomy & radiology education, rehabilitation, as well as patient education and information. We are currently conducting studies for exploring the potential of the Magic Mirror in these areas. Please refer to our publications for further details. Magic Mirror @ Weltklasse Zürich: In collaboration with the Universitäts Spital Zürich (USZ), we are happy to announce that the Magic Mirror will be features at this year's Weltklasse Zürich event in Zurich, Switzerland. Weltklasse Zürich is an annual, world-class athletic event that takes place in the Letzigrund stadium and is also referred to as the "One-day Olympics". Before and during the event, the Magic Mirror will be demonstrated at the Zurich main station, which also hosts several events such as the women's pole vault championships. Magic Mirror @ Medical AR Summer School 2019: We are very pleased to announce that the Magic Mirror will be set up during the Medical Augmented Reality Summer School 2019 which is hosten by our chair in collaboration with the Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. The focus of the Medical Augmented Reality Summer School Zurich is to teach the new generation of scientists the basics, challenges, and recent advantages of Augmented Reality as well as to strengthen the connection between medicine, science and industry. The event will combine world class lectures on various topics of Medical AR as well as hands-on exercises and workshops. Magic Mirror @ BBC News Arabic: The Magic Mirror was the topic of the latest BBC News Arabic documentary. The Magic Mirror supports anatomy education of medical students with the help of monitor-based augmented reality. Magic Mirror @ ARD - W Wie Wissen: The Magic Mirror was recently featured in the ARD documentary "W - Wie Wissen". "In medicine, novel techniques such as Augmented Reality have to pass many tests and trials before they can be applied to humans. But they are already using this technology to train medical students. The Munich University Hospital is using a software program developed by researchers led by Professor Navab. Anatomy lessons on the Magic Mirror provide completely new insights into the human body. Students can see anatomical structures on their own body, improving their spatial understanding by seeing cross sectional images augmented onto their own bodies". Magic Mirror @ MSRM Opening Event: We are thrilled to announce that the Magic Mirror will be part of the Human Digital Twin exhibition at the Munich School for Robotics and Machine Intelligence opening event on October 26th, 2018, at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany. The interdisciplinary Human Digital Twin (HDT) focus group is committed to initiating medical innovation by building up comprehensive expertise, technology and infrastructure toward the development of a digital human. Specifically, we aim to drive the development of new digital technologies for a variety of medical therapies and applications, such as surgery and telemedicine, which will enable comprehensive multi-scale biomonitoring, more intuitive and real-time representations of medical imaging, as well as improved diagnostics and prevention via multi-modal human-machine interfaces. By integrating vast amounts of data from heterogenous sensor networks into condensed outputs, HDT aims to improve patient outcomes and to change the interface of medical technology in the long term. Magic Mirror @ SESAM 2018: The latest version of the Magic Mirror will be demonstrated and featured live as part of the keynote of Prof. Nassir Navab at SESAM 2018 in Bilbao, Spain. SESAM is an annual conference with a focus on medical simulation and education. The purpose of SESAM is the development and application of simulation in education, research and quality management in medicine and health care, the facilitation, exchange and improvement of the technology and knowledge throughout Europe, as well as the establishment of combined research facilities.

Magic Mirror @ OTWorld 2018: The next live demonstration of our Augmented Reality Magic Mirror will take place in collaboration with Mecuris GMBH during this year's OT World in Leipzig from May 15.05.2018 - 18.05.2018. OTWorld offers a wide variety of choice amongst current trends, growth strategies and product innovations for orthotists and prosthetists, orthopaedic shoe technicians, podiatrists and chiropodists, rehabilitation technicians, therapists and doctors, as well as for engineers and funding organisations. Mecuris strives to empower physicians and orthopaedic technicians to 3D-print patient-specific prostheses & orthoses without prior 3D design or 3D printing know-how enabling a 100% customised fit for their patients. Magic Mirror @ Arab Health 2018: A demonstration of the latest version of our Augmented Reality Magic Mirror system will take place at Arab Health in Dubai. Magic Mirror @ MEDICA 2017: Our Augmented Reality Magic Mirror will be at this year's MEDICA from 13.11.2017 - 16.11.2017 in Düsseldorf. Magic Mirror @ IFSO 2017: With great pleasure we announce that our Augmented Reality Magic Mirror will be shown at this year's International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) in London from 29.08.2017 - 02.09.2017. The main goal of IFSO is the optimisation of the treatment of severely obese patients bringing together surgeons and allied health professionals. IFSO is committed to the creation of a global system for accreditation of bariatric centres and individual surgeons. IFSO’s main activity is the organization of the yearly World Congress, which provides a forum to exchange knowledge on surgical treatment of severely obese patients, to present new techniques, research and concepts, and to meet the experts in the field. Special thanks to Prof. Karcz from LMU Munich for demonstrating the Magic Mirror at IFSO.
Magic Mirror @ TED x TUM: The Magic Mirror was showcased live during Prof. Nassir Navab's TED-talk at the TED x TUM Entelechy event. Why is it that we have all the information we need at our fingertips, but the surgeon operating on us is limited to using their human senses? Nassir Navab's mission is to introduce Augmented Reality into the surgery room, so that surgeons can see relevant data such as X-Ray or MRI as part of their reality on the operating table. This eye-opening talk includes an interesting live demo and shows us cutting-edge technology for the surgery of the future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
