Abstract

The project Augmented Reality Supported Patient Education and Consultation (Augmented Reality unterstützte Operationsaufklärung) aims at developing Augmented Reality (AR) supported communication tools for patient education. The development of the targeted systems involves disciplines reaching from image registration, human computer interaction and in-situ visualization to instructional design and perceptual psychology. As a primary clinical application, we determined breast reconstruction in plastic surgery.

Clinical Relevance

As a primary clinical application, we determined breast reconstruction in plastic surgery. The objective of the project is to investigate whether a digital mirror allowing for virtual breast augmentation and visualization of further anatomy projected right on the patient's body can support the communication of limitations, risks and potentials of a surgical intervention. The amount and type of transferred information has to be strongly adapted to the patient's needs and requirements.
