A study on construction of respiratory lung motion model for bronchoscope guidance system
18th Meeting of the Japan Society of Computer Assisted Surgery, Tokyo, Japan, November 2009 (bib)

This paper describes about a study on generating a respiratory lung motion model using two different phases of 3D CT images for the use in a bronchoscope guidance system. Since respiratory motion is not considered in the present guidance systems, undesirable position and orientation errors increased due to respiratory. Therefore we propose a method that models the respiratory motion from two 3D CT images at different phases in respiratory and generates an intermediate 3D CT image at an arbitrary phase. In this paper, we discuss about two interpolation methods based on linear and trigonometric interpolations to estimate the deformation between the two images taken in inspiration and expiration. A quantitative comparition of our two interpolation methods is conducted using 4D CT data with anatomical feature points. We confirm that an intermediate CT image at arbitrary phase can be generated in average errors of 1.32 mm and 1.17 mm, respectively.
