Title: Clinical evaluation of freehand SPECT for sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast carcinoma
Abstract: This article highlights the clinical evaluation of free-hand SPECT(fhSPECT) for sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer. It contains some prepared tasks for the application of fhSPECT in the surgery room and an application for image processing between different modalities and evaluation of measured results. The first part is to observe the workflow of normal sentinel lymph node biopsy and record the duration of different processes in order that it can provide a reference for developing the fhSPECT in the aspects of hardware and software and suggestions for the practical application in the surgery room. The second part is to design the experiment for applying the fhSPECT with the patients. It shows that acquisition of using fhSPECT takes only 8.77 minutes on the average and it will not cause damage or uncomfortable feeling for the patients. The reconstructed image from the measurement data shows a good matching in terms of detected sentinel lymph nodes compared to the planar scintigraphy. The last part describes the detection of 3D position of sphere centers using 2 phase Hough transform which appear in the CT slice images. They are reference points for image processing between different modalities. A simple application is developed for the detection and Some practical issues are discussed.
