Heterogeneous Tracking for Augmented Reality in Wide-Area Environments

Tracking is a major challenge for Augmented Reality applications. Espe-cially heterogeneous and wide-area sensor setups make high demands on the engineers who are responsible for their setup and maintenance. The trackframe project has developed methods that can simplify these tasks tremendously.

  • A tracking middleware decouples applications from the underlying sensor infrastructure. A new graphical modeling approach based on spatial relationship graphs allows for rapid specification of spatial transformations between objects and sensors in the scene. It also al-lows for the deduction of new, initially unknown transformations by ap-plying spatial relationship patterns to the graph. From this, data flow descriptions can be generated and instantiated efficiently by the mid-dleware.

  • Decoupling applications from tracking implies that dedicated tools are needed for maintenance tasks. Examples are graphical planning and analysis tools, calibration tools and error analysis functionality.

In the trackframe project, these concepts have been defined, tested and validated by using the framework and tools to develop industrial applications.
