Over the last decade Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
have evolved from experimental technologies to mainstream research
activities that are beginning to affect industry and society.
By their very nature, MR and AR are highly interdisciplinary fields
involving signal processing, computer vision, computer graphics, user
interfaces, human factors, wearable computing, mobile computing,
computer networks, distributed computing, information access,
information visualization, and hardware design for new displays and
sensors. MR/AR concepts are applicable to a wide range of applications.
The International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality is the
premier forum in this vital field. A series of independent conferences on
AR and MR started in 1999 and led to a joint symposium in 2002.
(For the full history, please see http://www.ismar-conf.org). This year
we are proud to present the fourth installment of the series: the 4th
IEEE and ACM International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented
Reality (ISMAR 05).
The symposium will be held on Oct. 5-8, 2005, in Vienna, Austria.
We invite you all to participate in this great event for the exchange
of new ideas in this exciting field!

Paper Submissions
Paper submissions are due Monday, April 11, 9pm US Pacific Time Zone.
ISMAR is a high-quality conference with a competitive submission process.
In 2004, ISMAR accepted only 20% of the papers submitted. ISMAR
has a rigorous reviewing process that is similar to the processes used by
ACM SIGGRAPH and ACM UIST. We have two tiers of reviewers: the
area chairs and the program committee. Each paper is assigned to an
area or program chair, and that person will procure at least three reviews
from the program committee or external reviewers, in addition to
providing a metareview. Then the area and program chairs will meet
in person to discuss the papers and determine which to accept.
For this year, we will accept two categories of paper submissions:
full-length papers and short papers.
Full-length papers are up to ten pages long and are held to rigorous
standards of contribution and evaluation. Short papers are up to four
pages in length and are reviewed through the same process, but the
expected amount of contribution is less due to the shorter format.
Short papers generally should not include exhaustive implementation
details or user studies. Examples of topics appropriate for the
short paper format are:
A smaller, focused research result that can be completely described and justified in 4 pages, and does not merit a 10 page full paper.
An application case study.
A novel concept or application that does not have the level of implementation and evaluation expected of a 10 page full paper.
These are only suggestions; the short paper format is open to other
topics appropriate to its length.
Accepted full-length and short papers will be presented at the
conference and published in the proceedings. The allotted
presentation time will depend upon the length and content of the paper.
Previously published work may not be submitted, nor may the work be
concurrently submitted to any other conference or journal. Such papers
will be rejected without review.
Reviews will be single blind (i.e., include authorship information with
the submitted paper.)
Papers must be in English.
Authors may include supplementary materials (such as a video) with the
submission, and such materials are highly encouraged if they provide evidence of the claimed contribution. The submission should include
all information necessary to evaluate the paper and must not ask
reviewers to go to web sites or other external information sources,
since that jeopardizes the anonymity of the reviewers. Submissions
that require external sites will either be returned for correction or
rejected without review.
ISMAR will provide awards to the two Best Student Papers. To qualify for consideration, the submitted paper must be full length, and the student must be the sole author or the student must be the first author and the prime contributor to the paper. Authors must identify the paper as qualifying for consideration of this award when submitting the paper. Award winners will be announced at the conference.

Paper Submission Guidelines
A submission can only be submitted under one category (full paper,
short paper, or poster). You must not submit the same material
simultaneously to different categories (e.g., as both a full paper and a
poster).
Paper and poster submissions must be formatted for 8.5"x11"
paper. Please follow the
IEEE Computer Society authoring guidelines (LaTeX style, MS Word template).
All materials will be submitted electronically to http://precisionconference.com/~ismar.
If you already have an account with that system (because you have been asked to be a reviewer), please use that account to submit materials. Otherwise, create a new account.
Papers and posters must be submitted as PDF documents.
Supplementary videos are encouraged. Videos should not be longer than 5 minutes long, and the total size of all submitted materials (including the PDF doucment) must be under 50MB. If you include a video, also include a text file describing what codec you used to create the video. Videos should be playable by either the current Windows Media Player or Apple Quicktime player. It is preferable that your video be playable by these standard players without requiring additional codec installations. If you require a special codec (e.g. Divx), make certain that you include instructions on how to find and install that codec. If the reviewers cannot play your video file, it will reduce the chances of your submission being accepted.
Poster Submissions
Poster submissions are due Monday, April 11, 9pm US Pacific Time Zone.
Posters provide an interactive forum in which authors can present work
to conference attendees during the poster session (tentatively scheduled
for Thursday Oct. 6). Accepted posters will be displayed on large
boards (approximately 3 feet by 4 feet). Poster authors will also have
one minute to describe their poster during a “poster teasers” preview
before the poster session.
Poster submissions are two pages in length. They are reviewed through
the same procedure that papers are, but they are much more leniently
judged due to space limitations and because they do not count as
a publication. We encourage posters on new work that is still in
progress, or small, highly focused results. The main criteria are
novelty and usefulness to the ISMAR community.

Demo Submissions
Demo submissions are due June 30, 2005.
ISMAR05 will provide the opportunity to showcase the latest
research results in the technical demonstration venue.
The demo session is tentatively scheduled for Thursday Oct. 6. Demo
presenters will also have one minute to describe their demo during
a “demo teaser” preview before the demo session.

After sending email, you should get a notification that your email has been received.
If you experience probems sending large emails (esp. movies), contact to get the possibility to upload the files to an ftp server.
