Systementwicklungsprojekt (SEP): User interface design of beta-probe-guided surgery

Abstract

In minimally invasive tumor resection, the desirable goal is to perform a minimal but complete removal of cancerous cells. In the last decades interventional nuclear medicine probes supported the detection of remaining tumor cells. However, scanning the patient with an intraoperative probe and applying the treatment are not done simultaneously. In the past we extended the one dimensional signal of a nuclear probe to a four dimensional signal including the spatial information of the distal end of the probe (current status). This signal can be then used to guide the surgeon in the resection of residual tissue and thus increase its spatial accuracy while allowing minimal impact on the patient. The next step is to prepare clinical experiments and integrate the solution into the clinical workflow. Whithin this project will a suitable interface for the surgeons and its evaluation through ex-vivo experiments has to be conducted.

Task

Extension of the existing navigation software and user interface and clinical experiments (for more details see abstract above or live demo at Klinikum rechts der Isar). The SEP will be at Klinikum rechts der Isar (Max-Weber-Platz).

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge: C++, knowledge of OpenGL (CG) and QT is of advantage.
  • Interest in medical technology (You will work most of the time at Klinikum rechts der Isar at NaNuLab)
  • Interdisciplinary Teamwork (Medicaine, Physics, Computer Science)

The student in charge of this project will contribute in that step by developing an interface suitable for the surgeons and evaluate it in ex-vivo experiments.
